A ‘Samurai Commute Route’ Since the Edo Period

Hiyodorizaka in Sakura City is not just any bamboo forest. During the Edo period, this was an actual ancient path (komichi) used by samurai living in the adjacent residences to commute to Sakura Castle.

The gently curving slope and the tall bamboo that grows so thick it almost hides the sky have not changed for hundreds of years. The moment you step in, you are enveloped in an overwhelming silence that feels like time traveling.

The Miracle of a ‘Private Experience’ Unlike Arashiyama

While the world-famous bamboo grove of Arashiyama in Kyoto is beautiful, it is constantly overflowing with thousands of tourists, making it almost impossible to take a photo without strangers in it.

However, Hiyodorizaka is a super secret spot that is still largely unknown to foreign tourists. On a weekday afternoon, you can enjoy this magical space completely to yourself.

Tips for Taking Professional-Looking Photos
If you shoot from the middle of the slope looking upwards, the height of the bamboo and the depth of the path are emphasized, resulting in a highly dramatic photo. Taking a picture from behind of someone walking in a kimono is also highly recommended.
