Antique Medical Instruments at Juntendo

The Legacy of Taizen Sato

Established in 1843 by **Taizen Sato**, a prominent physician of Dutch medicine, Sakura Juntendo was not just a hospital but a private academy for studying the latest Western medicine.

During Japan’s period of national isolation, Western medical knowledge was incredibly precious. Sato’s exceptional surgical skills gained widespread fame, attracting patients and medical students from all over the country. It is no exaggeration to say that this place laid the foundation for modern medicine in Japan.

Exquisite Antique Medical Instruments

Inside the hall, numerous precious medical instruments—cutting-edge at the time—are on display.

You can see beautifully arranged glass apothecary bottles and intricate metal scalpels that look surprisingly similar to modern ones. These exhibits convey the high skill level of craftsmen of the era and the intense dedication of Japanese scholars trying to adopt Western medicine.

💡 Must-See: Anatomical and medical books written in Dutch. The handwritten translation notes paint a vivid picture of students studying desperately.
