A Beautiful Garden Designated as a National Scenic Beauty
What is Sakura Garden?
Adjacent to the Former Hotta Residence is the “Sakura Garden,” a vast Japanese garden designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. It was designed primarily to be viewed from the reception rooms of the residence. It uses an advanced landscaping technique called “Shakkei” (borrowed scenery), which incorporates the natural slopes and surrounding trees into the garden’s background.
It shows different faces throughout the four seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. The contrast between the expansive lawn area and the beautifully manicured pine trees is especially stunning.
Strolling the Garden
After finishing your tour inside the residence, be sure to step outside and stroll through the garden. You can actually walk through the scenery you were just admiring from the Engawa (veranda).
The garden is quiet and uncrowded, feeling just like a private park. Find your favorite angle and take some amazing photos with the historic residence in the background.
