Escape the Crowds: The Authentic Samurai Experience Just 30 Minutes from Narita

Why Sakura City is Japan’s Best Kept Secret

If you’re landing at Narita International Airport or looking for a deep, authentic Japanese cultural experience without the overwhelming crowds of Kyoto’s Arashiyama, Sakura City is the perfect destination.

Once a prosperous castle town during the Edo period (1603-1867), Sakura has miraculously preserved its historical samurai districts, serene bamboo groves, and traditional atmosphere.

While Kyoto’s bamboo forest is packed with tourists shoulder-to-shoulder, Sakura boasts Hiyodorizaka — an ancient, slightly sloping path entirely flanked by towering, lush green bamboo.

Best Time for Photography
Because this spot is virtually unknown to foreign tourists, you can take perfect portrait photos with no one in the background even during the bright hours of 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on weekdays.

There are three real samurai houses (not replicas) built in the late Edo period lined up here. The biggest feature is that you can actually take off your shoes and step onto the tatami mats.

Important: CASH ONLY!
The admission fee is very cheap at 250 yen for adults, but credit cards and electronic money cannot be used at all. Be sure to prepare Coins & Small Bills.

Just a short walk from the Samurai Houses lies the Sakura Castle Ruins Park. Although the main castle tower no longer exists, the massive dry moats (karabori) and earthworks tell the story of the castle’s grand history.

In spring, it is one of the premier cherry blossom spots in the prefecture. It’s highly recommended to take a relaxing stroll here after visiting the Samurai Houses.

4. Food: Savor Local Cuisine in a Historic Castle Town

Local Food in Sakura
(Image: Traditional Soba & Unagi)

Around Sakura City, there are many long-established restaurants dating back to the Edo period. We highly recommend traditional Japanese dishes such as ‘Soba’ (like Tensoba, cold buckwheat noodles with tempura) and nutritious ‘Unagi’ (grilled eel over rice).

Many local diners might not have English menus, but they often display food photos or plastic food models outside. You can simply point to what looks good to order!

🍜
Watch Out for Ticket Machines
In some soba or ramen shops, you buy a ‘food ticket’ using cash at a machine near the entrance. If you’re unsure what to get, pressing the big button on the top left (usually the shop’s recommendation) is a fail-safe choice!

5. Pasalubong: Uwiin ang Khas ng Chiba

Local Souvenirs in Chiba

Local Souvenirs in Chiba
